It's Thanksgiving Weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the year on the roads in British Columbia - and certainly the case for those catching a trip off the Island.

It's Thanksgiving Weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the year on the roads in British Columbia - and certainly the case for those catching a trip off the Island.

BC Ferries is preparing for its busiest weekends of the year, adding dozens of extra sailings between the Island, Metro Vancouver, and the Sunshine Coast.

An additional 85 sailings have been added for more than 420-thousand expected passengers, and 160-thousand vehicles, straight through to Tuesday.

BC Ferries says at peak times, some sailings may reach passenger capacity and some walk-on customers may experience a wait.

Walk-on passengers can make a free booking on the three routes connecting the Island and Metro Vancouver.

The service says customers travelling with vehicles without an advance booking will likely experience sailing waits at peak times.

The best option to avoid sailing waits is to travel during less busy times, and arrive at least 45-minutes before your scheduled departure.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
