North Island College students in the Comox Valley can now apply for accommodation, representing a major milestone as the college gets set to open its first-ever student housing this fall.
As of this month, NIC is accepting applications for the new student housing at the Comox Valley campus.
“The opening of housing applications at North Island College marks a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing student life and success,” said Kathleen Kuhnert, Vice President, Students & Community Engagement.
“This achievement reflects nearly a decade of dedicated work, including extensive studies, consultations and collaborations with the K’ómoks First Nation, our students and our community partners. It is a testament to NIC’s commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive environment where students can live, learn and thrive.”
The application page in the Student Housing Portal has a brief description of the units available and instructions on how to apply and make payment.
This includes information on the types of units ranging from nano to family, eligibility requirements, rates and childcare services.
The furnished suites include utilities and high-speed Wi-Fi. The facility will also have pay-for-use laundry, free parking and storage for bikes or outdoor equipment.
“The launch of student housing at North Island College is a transformative step toward creating an accessible and inclusive educational experience,” said Craig Whitton, Director, Student Affairs.
“By providing a safe, affordable and vibrant living environment, we’re fostering a sense of belonging and enabling students to focus on their academic and personal growth. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the whole student — both inside and outside the classroom.”
The provincial government announced funding for the project in February 2022.
A blessing event with K’ómoks First Nation took place at the Comox Valley campus in January 2023 and work began later that year, to be completed in time for the first students to move in this fall.
The housing will open for the fall semester in September.
