A B.C. First Nation and Houston-based company are teaming up to buy a proposed pipeline project.
“Today is a historic day for the Nisga’a Nation and represents a sea change in major industrial development in this country,” said Eva Clayton, President of the Nisga’a Lisims government, in a news release.
“In taking an equal ownership role in this pipeline, we are signalling a new era for Indigenous participation in the Canadian economy.”
Nisga’a Nation and Western LNG are buying the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission project from Calgary-based T-C Energy.
It’s a ready-to-construct 900-km natural gas pipeline that will run from Hudson’s Hope to Lelu Island.
The Nation calls it a historic day signaling a new era for Indigenous participation in the Canadian economy.
Clayton says First Nations are no longer being left behind.
“At long last, hope and optimism are returning to Indigenous communities across northern BC,” she said.
The deal is expected to close in a few months.
