Drivers are reminded to watch for kids as they make their way back to school today.

While it is the first day for most students, there are some exceptions depending on the student's grade level.

A reminder for students and families to perform a daily health check each day before heading to school.

If you do test positive for Covid-19, you should self-isolate at home for 5 days and until your symptoms improve.

You can continue to attend school if someone in your household is sick and/or self-isolating as long as you do not have any symptoms of illness and feel well.

The City of Courtenay is extending the evening hours for reduced 30 km/hour speeds in school zones to 8 p.m. on school days.

The change, developed in collaboration with School District No. 71, comes into effect starting today.

The change will benefit children and youth attending after-hours activities at schools, such as playgrounds, sports, events, and organized community groups.

Previously, school zone hours were in effect from 8.a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Motor Vehicle Act gives municipalities the flexibility to extend school zone hours beyond the default hours on school days.

In addition, the City is installing new "End School Zone" signs to mark the end of all Courtenay school zones.

Speed limit reductions in playground zones are in effect from dawn to dusk, 365 days per year.

School zone speed limit reductions are designed to provide a safer environment for children using school facilities.

Students are also back to class at North Island College today.

In-person events are happening Tuesday and Wednesday at the Campbell River campus as new students get the lay of the land.

Orientation will include a free student lunch tomorrow.

Today and tomorrow, a marketplace in the Student Commons with NIC supports, community organizations with helpful information, tools, and resources, running both days from 11am to 1pm.

Sessions cover topics such as how to navigate NIC’s digital learning platforms, an overview of the supports that are available to students at NIC and how to get involved on campus.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
