BC Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Terry Teegee has thanked Prime Minister Trudeau for his leadership and service as the PM announced this week he is stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party.
Teegee is calling on the party to elect a strong, principled leader who will recommit to progressive values, bring Canadians together, and take the necessary steps to honour, recognize and implement the internationally recognized human rights of First Nations peoples throughout this country.
Teegee says while Trudeau’s tenure is one which made considerable commitments to First Nations and significant progress, it has also been hampered with delays, obstructions and half-measures.
He points to Canada’s historic steps of passing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, and An Act Respecting Indigenous Languages.
Unfortunately, he says efforts to implement these commitments and others have been hampered by slow-implementation progress, lack of funding, inadequate engagement with First Nations, and political gamesmanship.
Liberal MPs will meet in Ottawa today for the first time since Trudeau announced he’d be stepping down, as soon as a new leader is selected.
Details on how that will play out will be discussed today.
