BC United is out with wildfire policy reforms ahead of the fall election that it says will make British Columbia a global leader in wildfire prevention and protection.
It would establish the Wildfire Prevention and Response Institute, to be based in Kamloops.
In a release, BC United says the institute would leverage cutting-edge technology, expert local and Indigenous knowledge, and innovative forest management practices to reduce the impacts of natural disasters and reduce their economic and environmental impact.
The party says should it win in October, it would also invest in advanced fire suppression technology, such as specialized drones, mass water delivery systems, night-vision technology, and AI-driven early detection systems.
A full-time firefighting service would also be established with what the party said would offer significantly more front-line personnel and an expanded provincial aircraft fleet, to hit fires hard and fast to better protect homes, infrastructure, and forests.
Election day is October 19th.
