Both Sides Of B.C. Port Strike Considering Mediator's Recommendations

The port-workers’ strike is into its 13th day - but both sides are now mulling over recommendations to end the dispute.

The federal labour minister has received a federal mediator's recommendations for a settlement, and he’s passed them on to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada and the B.C. Maritime Employers Association.

They were to come up with their next steps within 24 hours.

Western premiers meeting in Winnipeg this week, including David Eby, were united in their call for the federal government to step in.

About 7,400 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada have been on strike since July 1, halting cargo in and out of ports in B.C., including Canada’s largest, the Port of Vancouver.

The workers say they’re fighting for protections against contracting out and automation, as well as pushing for higher wages.
