On Saturday, city of Campbell River officials will be promoting fire safety with the summer season quickly approaching.

The City of Campbell River Fire Department will be promoting the FireSmart Plant Tagging Program, which helps make your home and the community more reliant to wildfires. Trees and shrubs that are less susceptible to fire will be tagged and easily identifiable. They'll have a booth at the Campbell River Garden Centre from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at Sticks ‘n Stones Nursery, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In recent years we have seen wildfires across BC become increasingly more volatile, consume more hectares of forest, and more communities being evacuated. It is important to recognize the potential for wildfires to increase or become more intense on Vancouver Island. As development continues within the City of Campbell River and surrounding areas, there is increased potential for Wildand Urban Interface fires to arise.

The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is an area where structures are next to and intermingled with the surrounding forest, putting them at higher risk from wildfires. There are many things you, as a homeowner, can do to reduce the threat of a wildfire damaging your home. One of the ways you can take action is by applying FireSmart principles. The FireSmart program provides resources for keeping homes, neighbourhoods, and communities prepared for wildfires. It provides homeowners with basic principles, tools, and tips to prepare their home and property for a potential threat, which in turn, increases the chances of the home surviving a wildfire.

Using FireSmart principles, the Campbell River Fire Department can conduct a free, FireSmart home assessment for the homeowner. This will allow you to understand how protected your home is, and what steps can be taken to increase the protetion of your home. Having a FireSmart home is vital for protection against a wildfire, but collectively it can also help to FireSmart your neighborhood. FireSmart neighbourhoods are safer and more effective against the threat of wildfire, which can help protect the entire community.
