Campbell River comingled food and yard waste collection starts on Monday.
About 30% of the total waste in the landfill is currently food & yard waste.
The initiative aims to reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills and, in turn, extend its lifespan.
As part of a partnership with Comox Strathcona Waste Management and neighbouring communities, the City says it is committed to diverting organic materials from landfills and creating high-quality, nutrient-rich soils for the community.
A comprehensive list of food and yard items that are accepted for curbside collection can be found on the City's website along with all the program information residents may need.
Under the program, the City says residents should collect kitchen waste using their City provided green kitchen bin, or whatever you have handy. It then goes into a dedicated securely lidded curbside organics bin.
The City is also pointing residents to the Campbell River Recycles App, which it says is a useful tool for residents to stay informed about curbside collection updates.
