
The Campbell River School District is reaffirming its dedication to fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments, ensuring that all students feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
At its recent board meeting, Rachel Nelson, principal of École Phoenix Middle School and district anti-racism lead, along with Christine Middleton, principal of Sayward Elementary and district inclusion lead, provided an update on their efforts to advance these priorities.
The two emphasized the close connection between anti-racism and inclusion, noting that both are rooted in identity, helping students understand their own experiences while embracing diverse perspectives.
Their work aligns with the district’s strategic goals and long-standing commitment to equity.
SD72 is taking steps to assess how welcoming and inclusive school environments are, ensuring that staff feel equipped to address incidents of racism and discrimination.
A new initiative, Snippets of Learning, will provide staff with concise educational tools, such as myth-busting facts and discussion prompts, to help guide conversations about inclusion and equity.
Beyond the classroom, Nelson and Middleton are collaborating with the district’s human resources department to review and refine policies.
Their goal is to identify and eliminate systemic barriers, ensuring that inclusion is embedded in hiring practices and district procedures.
