In response to the low overnight temperatures, the City of Campbell River activated a warming centre at the Campbell River Community Centre over the weekend.
It was open Friday, Saturday, and last night, staffed by individuals with experience working with people experiencing homelessness so that necessary support is available.
The Warming Centre is open to everyone for short-term stays and is a place for vulnerable populations to come in overnight, warm up, and be provided with information on resources available to them. Visitors may bring pets on leashes and belongings, including bikes and carts.
Funding comes from the Province through Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. It’s meant to supplement overnight shelter beds and daytime services already available within the community, such as Kwesa Place, Evergreen Shelter and Housing, and the 40 temporary housing units with support services provided by the City and BC Housing on Homewood Road.
The temps are set be below zero again tonight - The City will notify the public of upcoming Warming Centre activations and operating hours on its website and social media channels.
