An announcement is expected today from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault on new electric vehicle targets.
The changes would mean one-fifth of all passenger cars, SUVs and trucks sold in Canada in 2026 will need to run on electricity.
Sales targets of 20 percent will ramp up gradually each year until we see 60 percent in 2030 and 100 percent electric vehicles being sold by 2035.
The Liberal government promised a national emissions reduction plan last April.
Targets for manufacturers were already in place and the new proposals offer more in the way of enforcement, including penalties for manufacturers and importers if they don’t reach the goals.
More than 7% of all vehicles sold in Canada were considered electric - partially or fully - in the first six months of this year.
