Following the fire at Carihi Secondary on Friday, the school will remain closed to all students and staff today and tomorrow.

School District 72 says it needs additional time to make plans for how they can support students and continue learning in the days ahead.

Staff are still gathering information from the fire department, its operations team, and health and safety staff that will guide next steps.

The priority is to get Carihi students back into a safe and supportive learning environment as soon as possible.

The District says it will continue to provide updates as they are available. Families can continue to check the district’s website and social media channels for official information.

Campbell River Fire responded to the school around 11pm on Thursday night.

The fire was contained in one area of the school, and the cause is unknown.

The City has asked the public to stay away from the area.

“Due to the prompt response of the City of Campbell River, Oyster River, and Courtenay Fire Departments, the fire was contained to the west side of the school,” said City of Campbell River Fire Chief, Dan Verdun.

“We are working to assess the building and thank all Campbell River residents, particularly the students and staff at Carihi, for their patience.”

The City is working with School District 72 throughout this response.
