The City of Campbell River is in the beginning stages of implementing its Housing Accelerator Fund Action Plan and invites residents to attend a drop-in style open house at the Maritime Heritage Centre on Tuesday, May 14th, from 5 to 7 p.m., to learn more.
Earlier this year, the City was awarded $10.4 million from the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund.
The City will use this funding to address barriers to development and fast-track 282 housing units in Campbell River.
That is part of a broader strategy to grow the local housing supply that looks to permit a total of 1,200 units, over the next three years.
The City’s HAF Action Plan centres around seven initiatives to reduce barriers to development and increase the availability of housing, including affordable housing, in Campbell River.
At the open house on May 14th, participants will be encouraged to provide feedback about four initiatives in particular, Accessory Dwelling Unit Strategy, Missing Middle Zoning Strategy and Infrastructure Readiness, Parking Regulations, and Multi-Family Housing and Transit Oriented Development.
The City says it will seek public feedback on the other three initiatives, Development Approval Process Review, Civic Lands Strategy and Financial Tools, at a later date.
Mayor Kermit Dahl says they know housing availability and affordability is a pressing concern for Campbell River residents, as it is for many communities across Canada.
He says they want to hear from as many residents as possible to ensure that the initiatives reflect community input.
