The City of Campbell River has declared Saturday, February 24, 2024, to be Coldest Night of the Year Day.
It’s to help mark The Coldest Night of the Year events, taking place in cities across Canada.
It’s a family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.
A proclamation from the City of Campbell River, reads in part that homelessness affects people of all ages in Campbell River - adults, children, families, and the elderly. It says finding appropriate housing is extremely difficult for people battling poverty, addiction, and mental health issues.
The proclamation goes on to say we all have a role to play in ensuring we recognize that having a home is a human right and that homelessness affects the community as a whole.
The Campbell River & North Island Transition Society is hosting a walk in support of the Campbell River and North Island Transition Society (CRNITS), a registered non-profit organization with a mission to provide safe shelter and services for vulnerable women and their children fleeing violence on northern Vancouver Island.
The Comox Valley event will benefit the Comox Valley Transition Society in support of individuals and families who are presently or are at risk of becoming homeless, and Dawn to Dawn, who utilizes a scattered housing - Housing First Model to house folks who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
More than 500 people have already registered for the Campbell River and Comox Valley walks.
