Comox Fire Rescue is urging everyone to get involved in local activities and learning opportunities during Fire Prevention Week, October 6th to 12th.

This year’s national campaign focuses on smoke alarms and the importance of having a functional one in the home to prevent fire related fatalities.

During Fire Prevention Week, the team at Comox Fire Rescue will host a series of events for residents to increase their personal preparedness, including an open house at the end of the week at the fire hall (1870 Noel Avenue), on Sunday, October 13, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Firefighters will be there to answer questions and provide feedback on fire escape plans. They will also be out in the community checking smoke alarms and delivering complimentary Dominos pizza on October 11.

“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between life and death in the event of a fire. It gives you and your family extra time to escape safely” said Fire Chief, Gord Schreiner.

“Regularly testing and maintaining your alarm is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your home and loved ones.”
Smoke alarm tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Test smoke alarms once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested.
