Six months after becoming Detachment Commander of Comox Valley RCMP, Inspector Scott Mercer says he’s settling right into the community.
The Comox Valley detachment polices the communities of Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Comox Valley Regional District, K'omoks First Nation, Denman Island, and Hornby Island with a combined population of approximately 80,000 residents.
Inspector Mercer made it to the Island after 19 years of service, with Comox Valley Detachment being his first post in British Columbia.
He says getting posted to Vancouver Island has been a lifelong goal of his.
Mercer has policed large and small municipalities, rural, as well as Indigenous, Cree and Blackfoot communities.
His service is evenly split between Contract Policing and Plain Clothes to include Crime Reduction, Community Policing, Media Relations, and Drugs and Serious Crimes. His last post before transferring to B.C. was with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, responsible for the oversight of all police agencies in the Province of Alberta.
Inspector Mercer says as soon as he arrived, in July of last year, he immediately noticed the experience and skill set of everyone working at the detachment.
“Everyone works well together, and they never hesitate to offer a lending hand, making it truly a cohesive team. I place great value on a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to help the community and that is something I see with the people at this detachment,” said Insp. Mercer.
