K’ómoks First Nation members will vote tomorrow on a proposed treaty that would provide the basis for a new relationship between K’ómoks and all levels of government.

The City of Courtenay, Comox Valley Regional District, Town of Comox and Village of Cumberland are offering best wishes to the K’ómoks community and recognize the contributions of the K’ómoks Treaty Team.

In a joint statement, CVRD Chair Will Cole-Hamilton, along with mayors Bob Wells, Nicole Minions, and Vickey Brown, say the process is a testament to the self-determination of the K’ómoks First Nation.

“We stand ready to engage collaboratively with K’ómoks, respecting the varied perspectives of its members, and we commit to being a supportive partner, no matter the path chosen,” the statement read.

K'ómoks traditional territory spans the Comox Valley in the central eastern part of Vancouver Island, extending into Johnstone Strait.

The K’ómoks Nation has approximately 350 members, primarily located in the Comox Valley.

Meanwhile, Wei Wai Kum First Nation has filed an injunction aimed at stopping the vote, concerning land near Salmon River.

K’ómoks First Nation says the injunction application is based on misinformation and seeks to interfere with K’ómoks’ democratic process and their right to self-determination.

“K’ómoks has always been committed to working collaboratively with our neighbours. Our history and ties to the Salmon River Watershed are undeniable, and we will continue to protect our rights and resources for future generations.

"The Treaty vote is a critical step in our journey toward self-determination, and we will not allow external interference to derail this process.” – K’ómoks First Nation Leadership.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
