The Comox Valley RCMP is launching an initiative that will enhance the police presence in the downtown Courtenay area.

“The downtown foot patrols will enable our officers to actively connect with the community on a personal level,” said Inspector Mike Kurvers, Officer in Charge at the Comox Valley RCMP Detachment.

“We are committed to working alongside the community to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.”

Starting this long weekend, and continuing until Labour Day in September, dedicated foot patrols will be deployed to support community safety and increase engagement with residents, businesses, and visitors.

The new foot patrols will focus on building positive relationships with community members, public safety, and crime prevention.

City of Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells extended his appreciation to the Comox Valley RCMP for the new program, saying Downtown Courtenay is one of Vancouver Island’s most vibrant and attractive shopping districts, and it makes sense to have officers on foot with all the shoppers.

During the foot patrols, RCMP officers will focus on various aspects of community safety, including conducting regular patrols of high-traffic areas, parks, and public spaces; engaging with business owners to address security concerns and offer crime prevention strategies; and providing safety tips and information to residents and visitors.
