Comox Valley RCMP are investigating an arson that occurred last week on the 800-block of Cumberland Road in Courtenay.

About 9:30 p.m., Thursday night, RCMP received a report from the Courtenay Fire Department that they were extinguishing a fire on the steps of the old Courtenay Train Station.

A witness approached firefighters with surveillance footage showing an individual approaching the area, lighting a fire, and then departing on foot.
Investigators have obtained the footage from the witness and were canvassing the area for more, including from local businesses.

Constable Monika Terragni said in a release that police were asking anyone who was in the area before and after 8:30 p.m. last Thursday night to review their surveillance or dashcam footage and to recall any unusual activity that may assist in the investigation.

The only image of the suspect available shows a person wearing a beige jacket, patterned pants, beige boots, and a black backpack with lighter-colored item(s) attached.

Investigators have seized evidence from the scene and are receiving assistance from the Integrated Forensic Identification Section.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and reference file 2025-1399.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Comox Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
