Comox Strathcona Waste Management staff and community partners conducted a landfill facility emergency response and evacuation exercise this week at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre.
“This exercise provided a valuable opportunity for our waste management team and partners to understand the impacts of a wildfire on landfill operations,” says Vivian Schau, Senior Manager of CSWM Services.
“By simulating emergency scenarios, we improve our ability to respond effectively in real situations, protect vital infrastructure, and ensure the continuity of this critical service, while promoting shared learning for all participants.”
The exercise was designed by CSWM and Comox Valley Emergency Management service partners, and involved participants and observers from various key organizations, including:
- BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre
- BC Hydro
- Berry and Vale Contracting
- City of Courtenay Fire Department
- Comox Strathcona Waste Management staff
- Comox Valley Emergency Management
- Fortis BC
- GFL
- K’ómoks First Nation
- North Island 911 Fire Dispatch
