The City of Courtenay will be hosting its third annual community clean-up event on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Community volunteers will meet at the Courtenay Air Park - adjacent to the Rotary Sky Park Playground at 10 a.m., rain or shine, for a safety orientation.
City staff will distribute trash pickers/grabbers, bags, and gloves.
Volunteers are then invited to pick up trash in the area around the park including nearby trails.
To help get an idea of participation levels, volunteers are being asked to pre-register at Spring Clean-Up.
Minors need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Mayor Bob Wells says the event started as a simple act of community spirit and has grown into an inspiring annual tradition.
“We’re once again calling on residents — families, friends, neighbors — to roll up their sleeves and be part of something bigger,” said Wells.
The goal is to keep garbage and debris from getting washed into storm drains, creeks, and waterways.
While promoting the initiative, the City points to recent efforts to reduce waste, including a 38 percent reduction in garbage going to the landfill with the introduction of automated curbside collection.
