Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says funding distributed to local food banks and food security programs across B.C. will help support people in need in the Comox Valley.
“In times of need, people in the Comox Valley rely on support from organizations like the Comox Valley Food Bank,” says RLeonard.
“This funding will help them continue to help people in our community who need it most, alongside the generous donations they fundraise for over the holiday season when life can be harder to afford.”
In August, the Province announced $15 million in funding for Food Banks B.C. to help people access nutritious food in their communities.
This funding was then distributed by Food Banks B.C. to local organizations, including in the Comox Valley.
The Comox Valley Food Bank received $38,030.
It’s part of a larger $200 million announced in the spring for work to strengthen the food supply, increase availability of fresh food, encourage food production in remote areas, strengthen food infrastructure, and create more regional food hubs.
Leonard says the funding is key in communities like the Comox Valley where food insecurity has risen due to global inflation, and emergencies that have interrupted supply chains and food production.
