The Village of Cumberland is moving along with a multi-family affordable housing project on Second Street.

A bylaw change would increase the permitted density and height to allow for four storeys and more units. It was given a second reading by Council last week.

The property is leased to the Village from the Vancouver Island Health Authority for the development of a multi-family affordable housing project with funding from BC Housing. The Village intends to apply for the funding in the next intake expected in early 2025.

The proposed mix of affordable units is 50% of units with rent geared to income, 20% of units with deep subsidy, and 30% of units near market rent.

At the January 13th meeting, Council also supported amendments to a housing agreement with Island Health to increase the number of units set aside for Island Health staff and to locate some parking.

The bylaw is expected to be considered for a third reading and final adoption at Council’s next meeting on January 27th.
