As Daylight Saving Time begins once again on Sunday, residents are reminded to "Spring Forward" and set their clocks ahead by one hour before heading to bed Saturday night.
In addition to adjusting your clocks, fire departments across the region are urging homeowners to use this time change as an opportunity to ensure their smoke alarms are in working order.
They recommend replacing smoke alarm batteries each spring or fall, coinciding with the time change, to make the process easier to remember.
Fire safety experts emphasize the importance of following the "once-a-month, once-a-year, once-a-decade" rule to keep smoke alarms working at their best:
- test alarms at least once a month
- replace batteries once a year
- replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 10 years.
For additional peace of mind, ensure that your smoke alarms are installed in accordance with the BC Building Code, which specifies the number and placement of alarms in your home.
