There’s an event coming up in Cumberland that might save you some money - or keep you from tossing something away that might have a lot more life left.

The first annual Cumberland Repair Café will be happening Saturday, April 29th (from 11am to 3pm) at Cumberland Community School.

The Cumberland Repair Café provides an alternative for household items destined for the landfill to be repaired and reused for free.

CCSS Program Coordinator Kate Ashton says they’ve partnered with the Comox Strathcona Waste Management to help in their goal of biannual Repair Cafes in the Comox Valley.

Ashton says it is a way for the community to become accustomed to holding on to their broken items and attending Repair Cafés, rather than throwing items out.

The Café is currently looking for volunteers to help out at the event.

If you have expertise in fixing items such as jewelry, small appliances, toys, or clothing, you can sign up as a volunteer.

CCSS is a registered charity that works to strengthen the community by improving access to healthy food, recreation, lifelong learning, and a network of support.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
