Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced she is stepping down from her Cabinet position.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, posted to her social media this morning, Freeland said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked her on Friday to step down as finance minister and move into another cabinet position.

Her letter stated that she and the Prime Minister had been at odds over the past couple weeks in how to move Canada forward, in light of US President-elect Donald Trump insisting that 25 percent tariffs on Canadian products are coming in January.

She wrote that after some thought, “the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet.”

She says she’ll still be running for re-election in her Toronto-area riding.

The government is set to issue a fall economic statement later on Monday.
