Organizers of a GoFundMe campaign for a Campbell River man who was stabbed in the heart and lung on July 14 are now offering to refund donations after the man was stabbed again.
The update comes after Colin Dube-Wheat was stabbed again Friday night in the 900-block of Cedar St., where RCMP were called to the scene around 7 p.m. to find a 22-year-old man attacking the 21-year-old father.
In a news release, RCMP called the attack “attempted murder.”
They said Dube-Wheat was stabbed multiple times by the suspect, who was known to him, and that drugs were a believed factor in the incident.
Police said there was no risk to the public.
A fast-growing GoFundMe campaign for Dube-Wheat, which raised more than $24,000, was launched after he was stabbed twice — once in the heart and once in the lung — two weeks prior, around 4:30 a.m. on July 14.
This incident happened in downtown Campbell River, and the GoFundMe description stated that Dube-Wheat was stabbed after hearing someone yelling for help.
He was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital for surgery and later released on July 22, with funds raised to support him and his family as he recovered.
Now after the second stabbing and more information from police, fundraiser organizers say donors can get their money back.
In the July 28 incident, the suspect who allegedly stabbed Dube-Wheat resisted police attempts to take him into custody, according to RCMP.
An altercation resulted in two officers being injured, and both were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dube-Wheat was taken to hospital and is expected to survive, while the suspect, identified as Christopher Carlos Rendall, was also taken to hospital to receive treatment.
Court documents show Rendall is now facing charges of attempted murder and resisting arrest.
