For 20 years, Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable homes for families on Vancouver Island North. And, today is Habitat for Humanity Day.

Since 2004, a total of 55 families have been served and are now homeowners.

The organization’s efforts have empowered countless families, giving them a strong foundation for better futures.

The mayors of Vancouver Island North have come together to proclaim October 7th as Habitat for Humanity Day in honour of the 20th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North.

The proclamation aligns with World Habitat Day, a day recognized globally to reflect on the basic human right to adequate shelter.

“We are proud to recognize Habitat for Humanity’s incredible work over the past two decades,” said Courtenay Mayor, Bob Wells.

“Their dedication to building homes, communities, and hope has had a profound impact on our region. Declaring October 7 as Habitat for Humanity Day is a testament to the difference they’ve made in the lives of so many.”

The official proclamation is being marked by a special fundraiser, “20 Years, $20,000” that will go towards their next build site in Campbell River.

The organization says the ongoing need for affordable housing and the role that Habitat continues to play is vital.

“We are deeply honoured by this proclamation,” said Stefano Tromba, Habitat for Humanity  Communications Director.

“As we celebrate 20 years of service, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of ensuring everyone has a safe place to call home. We look forward to continuing our work and making an even greater impact in the years to come.”
