Habitat for Humanity is nearing the end of its Meaning of Home Contest.

Students in grades 4, 5 & 6 across Canada have been invited to share a short essay or poem about what ‘home’ means to them.

Each entry provides a $10 donation from sponsors to local Habitats across the country, including Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North.

In the end, 3 winners & 9 runners-up will be chosen & awarded $30,000 & $10,000 respectively for their local Habitat.

As of Friday morning, British Columbia ranked 5th in Canada with 726, including a number from Vancouver Island.

The deadline to enter is Friday, February 24.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
