The Campbell River Library is offering up its first ever Human Library Day on Saturday, June 8th, iIn association with the International Human Library Organization.
They are creating a space for curious individuals to engage with people in their own city whom they might never otherwise have an opportunity to meet or learn more about. It's aimed at dissolving barriers, amplifying under-represented voices and overcoming misperceptions, on all sides of the conversation.
A Human Library is a gathering of “living books” (individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences) who are eager to share their experiences with interested “readers” from the community who are there to ask questions, make new connections and expand their scope of understanding.
Human Libraries typically feature “books” who belong to groups in society who have been exposed to stigma, stereotyping or prejudices, and who are now willing to share the insights they have gleaned with others. The goal is to “unjudge someone”.
The library’s living book “titles” will be announced at the event, and sign-ups will happen in person all day, starting at 930am Saturday. Sessions will start at 10 am and will take place in half hour rotations, with the final session ending at 4pm.
Normal library service will continue as usual on event day.
The Human Library Organization is a world renowned social charity whose mission is to promote dialogue, reduce prejudices and foster understanding.
