The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating an incident that resulted in the death of a man.

BC RCMP say officers responded to a home in Courtenay after receiving a report of an unknown person on the property at around 4:30 a.m. on April 23.

Officers found and arrested one man who was believed to be intoxicated, according to police. They say he was brought to RCMP cells without any incidents.

Police say while doing wellness checks, a guard noticed that the man was sitting against a wall and was not responsive. Officers provided first aid until Emergency Health Services arrived to take the man to the hospital, where the man later died.

The IIO will be investigating the incident to determine whether police actions contributed to the man’s hospitalization.

They say no further info will be released by police as it is now with the IIO.
