The City of Campbell River has installed rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFB) at four crosswalks, which it hopes improves pedestrian safety.
“Improving crosswalks encourages walking, improves safety and promotes healthy lifestyles and community,” says Melissa Heidema, City Transportation Specialist.
“Rapid rectangular flashing beacons are one of the many tools the City is using to assist pedestrians and drivers to create safer streets for all road users. Drivers and pedestrians should be mindful of each other, stay aware of the rules of the road, and give right-of-way when required.”
The new warning lights have been installed on Elk River Trail Road, at Maple Street and Evergreen Road, and on Highway 19A at Dahl and Twillingate Roads.
Upgrades to the first three crosswalks have been completed. Upgrades to the crosswalk at Highway 19A and Twillingate are waiting for pavement markings to be installed.
ICBC contributed close to $27,000 for the improvements.
