It is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Several events are planned for today in the region to recognize and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

The Laichwiltach Family Life Society hosts an event featuring food, games and activities, music, drumming, dancing and more.

It starts off at 8am with a 5km run - and an opening ceremony starting at 10am at the Kwanwatsi Big House, and a march to Spirit Square until 5pm.

The K’ómoks First Nation, in collaboration with local governments, cultural and community partners, will be hosting a celebration from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
