While the early predictions were quite optimistic when expecting an early spring, the further west our famous critters were, the more bleak were the predictions.
First out of the ground this morning was Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam, who popped up from her burrow and didn't see her shadow, calling for an early spring.
It was the same prediction from Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, followed by Ontario’s Wiarton Willie.
Lucy The Lobster at Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia, was early predictinng 6 more weeks of winter and as the morning progressed, that trend continued.
Manitoba Merv saw his shadow, predicting 6 more weeks of winter. The same occurred with Balzac Billy in Alberta.
Mount Washington’s Van Isle Violet is a 3-year-old female Vancouver Island marmot, and the Marmot Recovery Foundation says she has a full-time job – weather forecasting is a side hustle.
As part of the captive breeding program, Violet plays a critical role in recovering her species population from the brink of extinction.
She’s made two predictions so far, in both 2022 and 2023, calling for more winter both times, and she remained on that bleak trend this Groundhog Day, predicting six more weeks of bleak weather.
