The BC United party has unveiled its first batch of affordability-focused policy initiatives ahead of next year’s election.
“To (make life more affordable) you must reduce costs for people,” said BC United leader Kevin Falcon, as he laid out his four-point plan.
“It’s that simple. Reduce the pain at the pump.”
Falcon says his proposed measures are ‘’practical first steps, in response to the federal government’s recent flexibility in addressing cost pressures.’’
The plan includes eliminating the provincial fuel tax and removing the carbon tax from all home heating fuels to ensure a level playing field with other provinces.
The federal government announced last week it was pausing the carbon tax for those who heat their homes and businesses with oil - something that benefits Atlantic Canadians more than others - and doesn’t apply to BC because the province has its own carbon tax.
Falcon’s plan would also remove the carbon tax from on-farm fuel use, reducing operational costs for farmers, passing savings on to consumers at the grocery store.
