The Liberal Party of Canada has announced a new leader will be selected on March 9th.
“After a robust and secure nationwide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will choose a new leader on March 9, and be ready to fight and win the 2025 election,” the party said in a statement.
The party announced Thursday night that candidates will have just two weeks to decide to run.
Potential voters need to be signed up by January 27th in order to vote.
Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he is stepping down as Liberal leader and prime minister as soon as a replacement is found.
Those wanting to run have until January 23rd to declare their candidacy, which comes with a $350-thousand entry fee.
The National Board of Directors formally met last night to discuss and outline the initial rules.
Plans on how the vote will unfold will be finalized over the coming days.
The next Canadian election must be held by October 20 and polls show voters, angry over high prices and a shortage of affordable housing, could be set to elect the opposition Conservatives, regardless of who leads the Liberal Party.
