New Democrat MLA Michele Babchuk says that people in the Strathcona Regional District will benefit from funding that will help strengthen their community’s resilience against climate-related hazards.
“As communities in our region face new risks and greater needs due to climate-related emergencies, it’s important to support community preparedness now so we can keep people safer into the future,” said Babchuk.
“This funding for climate adaptation and emergency preparedness will help equip our communities to deal with difficult situations.”
The SRD is receiving about $1,2 million for the Reconciliation Through Restoration & A One Health Approach to Disaster Risk Reduction project, partnering with Campbell River, Gold River, Sayward and several area First Nations, including Homalco and K’ómoks.
The province is providing more than $44 million through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF), which will go to more than 70 projects in 63 communities under the Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Adaptation stream.
The investments also support the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, which outlines a broad range of actions through to 2025 to address climate impacts and build resilience across B.C.
