Just a few days away from the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The federal government officially designated September 30th as a day to honour the children who never returned home, and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
To support the Comox Valley community in acknowledging this day together, the Town of Comox, City of Courtenay, Village of Cumberland, and the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) will be closing community facilities and Administration offices on September 30 and/or October 2 in observance.
In Campbell River, the 8th Annual Every Child Matters Walk will begin at 11am at Spirit Square.
The Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex has minimized its operations on September 30 and are offering free family events in the afternoon, with a free public swim from 130pm to 430pm, along with an everyone welcome skate and pond hockey.
The arena will remain open for all pre-booked user groups, but regular programming will be cancelled on Saturday.
Both the SRD and CVRD are encouraging employees and others to honour the day, whether through personal reflection, education, participating in awareness activities in your community or by wearing orange to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools.
