It is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
It marks the day on December 6th, 1989 when a man murdered 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal.
A couple of events are happening today in the area.
The Campbell River & North Island Transition Society is holding a Vigil at the Laichwiltach Family Life Society.
Community members are invited to gather in the gymnasium for a moment of silence at 11am & a vigil at 12pm to honor women, whose lives have been lost due to gender-based violence.
There will be drumming, speakers, information booths, a Remembrance ceremony for the 14 victims from Quebec & more.
The Comox Valley Transition Society will also host a vigil on the plaza of the Comox Valley Art Gallery from noon to 1 p.m.
Community members are invited to gather for speakers, songs, lighting remembrance candles, and the traditional laying of roses.
