There has been a few changes to the sanitary sewer installation and alignment through the Lazo Hill area of the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project.

The Comox Valley Regional District had been pursuing a tunneling method for the sewer transmission main installation through Lazo Hill, but it’s been determined that the construction risks are too high to proceed as planned.

As a result, the sewer force main will be installed using traditional trenching rather than tunneling, which is consistent with the rest of the route.

Further due diligence is required along the Lazo-Brent Route to confirm viability, while the alignment along Morland Road and crossing the Lazo Marsh will serve as an alternate route, if required.

The Chair of the Sewage Commission, Doug Hillian says the project is the most complex undertaking in the CVRD’s history and - after careful consideration and detailed technical analysis - they’re ready to move forward.

He says the project will ‘’make a big difference in the safety of our sewer infrastructure - a change that is critically needed to prevent an environmental disaster in our community.”

Construction is set to begin in spring 2024.

The CVRD is planning a series of open houses to go over a traffic management strategy ahead of construction.

An update about the trenched route and next steps for construction will be presented during a Zoom Webinar from 7 to 8pm on Monday June 26.
