The new Superintendent for Comox Valley Schools has a message as the new school year is around the corner.
Jeremy Morrow, who steps into the role for the 2023-24 school year, says the school district grew much quicker than they were anticipating as families continue to move into the region.
He says that means they are looking at creative ways to make sure they have space for everyone.
Morrow says September is a busy time for staff and students, and this year Comox Valley Schools will once again be holding Truth and Reconciliation Week in schools to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system.
There will be different opportunities for students to learn as the district continues its journey of reconciliation.
SD 71 will also be holding the second annual Consent Week of activities from September 18-22, engaging students through thoughtful, affirming, intersectional, and age-appropriate conversations about consent.
Morrow adds the district will be working on several other important initiatives such as the Equity Scan, implementing the Framework for Enhanced Student Learning, and beginning the strategic planning process; work that is crucial in guiding the school district in the years ahead.
Morrow ended his note with a reminder to not send your child to school if they are feeling unwell or sick.
