The North Island Students’ Union (NISU) has focused on menstrual equity for years and is sending their gratitude to the communities within the Comox Valley for their involvement in improving period poverty.

“We’re excited to be able to partner with NIC to make these products available at all four NIC campuses,” said Carissa Wilson, NISU Organiser, College Relations.

“Menstrual products are a necessity, and they are also expensive. If your period arrives unexpectedly – as it does for 86% of those who experience menstruation – knowing you can easily access the products you need provides peace of mind for our members, all NIC students.”

Beginning in 2018, the Board of Directors at NISU have committed to the funding of a pilot project that provided low-waste, organic menstrual products to three bathrooms within the Courtenay campus of North Island College (NIC).

The project has expanded to include three more bathrooms on all four NIC campuses. NIC committed funding 100 per cent of the costs for this project.

NISU has since taken the project of menstrual equity into the communities of Cumberland, Comox and Courtenay and presented the idea that providing free menstrual products is a low-cost, high-impact poverty reduction idea.

The communities have all committed funding in their upcoming budgets to being a part of the program with free menstrual products being available in public buildings.
