Several people on the North Island will soon be awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Ceremonies will be happening over the next month.
The Coronation Medal, created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, was launched by Governor General Mary Simon, recognizing those who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province.
It is being awarded to 30,000 individuals and is the first Canadian honour to mark a coronation.
There are 22 recipients in the North Island - Powell River riding including six Comox residents who will be honoured at a ceremony this afternoon in Comox.
The Comox recipients include:
- Patti Alvarado, runs an Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society and Unbroken Chain in the Comox Valley
- Camille Douglas, manager of the Totem Times newspaper
- Janette Martin-Lutzer, president of the Comox Valley Ukrainian Cultural Society
- David Mellin, former Comox Valley Search and Rescue Manager
- Nina Usherwood, former Seargent
- William Webb, Afghanistan War veteran and Seargent
Details are still being confirmed for other ceremonies, but will include people in Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Gold River, Powell River, Alert Bay, and Campbell River, where 7 people will receive the medal in a ceremony on March 5th.
