Ocean Week Campbell River celebrations are happening June 1st to 8th at various venues and outdoor locations around the city.
Ocean Week Campbell River is a grassroots initiative organized by multiple community partners.
The events seek to benefit the community by increasing awareness of our many close ties to the ocean interns of work, leisure, and tourism — and of course the importance of ocean ecosystems, conservation and stewardship.
Events will be spread throughout the week of June 1st, wrapping with a public festival by the Maritime Heritage Centre/Discovery Passage Aquarium/Pier (621 Island Highway) on Saturday June 8th from 10am to 3pm.
We told you yesterday about tours on the M.V. Aurora - The Raven broadcasting live on June 3rd, when the public can head out on the water.
Other events include Greenway’s annual Loop Day; several birding and conservation tours; the first public screening of Send Kelp, a documentary with overtones of climate change and global food insecurity; and Whale Night, hosted by the Marine Education & Research Society, Cetus Research & Conservation and Ocean Wise.
There’s also a Sea School for the kids and two beach clean up opportunities, among other things.
The Discovery Passage Aquarium will be open, and the Maritime Heritage Centre is free for the day on Saturday, June 8th.
