Some traffic pattern changes are coming to Comox Road as part of the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project.

The change is needed for the construction of the new sewer forcemain pipe.

The one-way traffic pattern change is required as the width of Comox Road is insufficient to safely accommodate two lanes of traffic and the required construction. Two-way traffic from the Town of Comox is possible up to the construction zone.

Work begins on Monday, March 10th and will take place during the day from 6:00 am until 8:00 pm. until May.

Traffic along Comox Road during this time will be one-way moving west from Comox to Courtenay.

At night, Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am, the work zone will be closed to all traffic including bicycles and pedestrians.

On Sunday's the work zone will remain one-way overnight.

Vehicle traffic crossing the 17th Street Bridge will be unable to turn right onto Comox Road starting March 10th.

All vehicle traffic for the town will be detoured onto the official detour route, up Ryan Road and onto Lerwick Road.

During the next phase of construction, estimated to begin in the spring, the start of one-way traffic will move to Rodello Street and Comox Avenue.

“This is a major change to how we move around in the Comox Valley this spring and the impact will be felt by everyone,” says Director Doug Hillian, Chair of the Comox Valley Sewage Commission.

“The project team will be monitoring traffic flows closely and adjusting traffic light timing along the detour route to help keep vehicles moving. However, we will all need to add some extra time to our commutes and perhaps consider opportunities to carpool or use transit to reduce the volume of traffic during this period.”

The CVRD has been working with BC Transit to ensure that bus routes and times are adjusted with a handful of routes seeing some minor schedule changes or detours.
