Playgrounds

Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at 1:21 PM

A new accessible playground is on the way for students at Valley View Elementary.

Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says it will give kids a modern, accessible place to have fun, build friendships, and stay active.

This year, the BC government is providing funding for 26 new playgrounds in 26 school districts around B.C. Each district is receiving $195,000. The playgrounds will all be designed to be accessible for children of all abilities.

Last year, Denman Island Community School, also in the Comox Valley School District, received funding for a playground that is now complete. That was part of a $5-million investment which supported 25 new school playgrounds, 20 of which are now complete.

The Province says it has invested $40-million toward new playgrounds at 282 schools since 2018.

Laura Ward, president, BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, says the cash gives PAC volunteers the opportunity to focus their time and energy into community building, instead of fundraising.
