Island Health is notifying people about a possible exposure to avian influenza at Holly Hill Farm in Campbell River on specific dates last month.
Avian influenza has been identified among chickens and ducks at Holly Hill Farm, which have been euthanized.
The risk of humans developing avian influenza after contact with infected animals is very low.
However, out of an abundance of caution, Island Health’s Communicable Disease teams are directly notifying school classes and other children’s programs who attended the farm for private visits.
People who attended the farm during public hours on October 26th and October 27th may have been exposed.
Influenza viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and the virus sometimes spreads from wild birds and impacts domestic flocks such as poultry in agricultural settings.
Island Health says Holly Hill Farms is working with agricultural authorities to take all appropriate actions.
