Premier David Eby says British Columbia will not back down in the face of economic pressure.
In another statement concerning the Trump tariffs, Eby said Tuesday, “We didn’t ask for this fight the president has brought to Canada and to British Columbia. I'll tell you this — we're not going to shrink from it.”
BC Liquor Stores have begun removing all products from "red-state" U.S. producers and will cease further orders.
Additionally, the provincial government, including Crown corporations and health authorities, will prioritize Canadian and non-U.S. products in their purchasing decisions—something typically restricted due to trade agreements with the United States.
Eby says however now, it is time for action.
“We will make sure support is in place so B.C. businesses can pivot to both global and domestic markets.”
The Premier also acknowledged the federal government’s commitment to redistribute revenues generated from Canadian counter-tariffs, ensuring businesses and individuals receive support.
He says as a province, BC will fill in the blanks wherever Ottawa’s measures fall short.
Eby urged residents to “buy B.C., buy Canadian” at grocery stores, and reconsider travel plans to the U.S., suggesting alternatives within Canada or other parts of the world.
