In the last year, big oil and gas companies have made record profits – Imperial Oil made its largest profit in thirty years and Cenovus’ profits increased sevenfold.
Yet, families across the country are getting gouged at the pumps and are struggling to pay the bills. In the House of Commons, NDP MP for North Island - Powell River Rachel Blaney showed her frustration.
“This isn’t just companies passing on their costs to consumers, this is companies making tremendous profit, while every day Canadians in this country pay more than their fair share. When is government going to make those big companies pay theirs?”
The NDP’s motion called on the government to cancel all fossil fuel subsidies by the end of this year – including the new Carbon Capture Tax Credit – and reinvest this money to help people with growing costs and renewable energy. New Democrats also urged the Liberal government to double the GST tax credit and increase the Canada Child Benefit, putting money into 12 million families’ pockets.
